Dr Stephen Fenton
Dr Fenton graduated from Sydney University in 1976 and trained at Sydney Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Westmead Hospital. He commenced private practice as a consultant cardiologist in March 1983 and this practice has subsequently grown into what has now become Sydney Cardiology Group.
His clinical interests include general adult cardiology, echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation. Since 1983, he has been a Visiting Medical Officer at The Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga and The Hills Private Hospital, Baulkham Hills and holds Membership of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and is a Fellow of The American College of Cardiology.
Dr Fenton is actively involved in continuing professional education for GPs and cardiac health professionals. Under his direction SCG has become a well recognized practice for cardiac sonographer training and since 1999 he has been the convener of the renowned international cardiology conference called The Port Douglas Heart Meeting.
He has been an invited chairperson, moderator and panellist at clinical cardiology conferences both in Australia and internationally and is a monthly columnist on cardiac education for The Medical Observer.
Dr James Wong
Following graduation with honours from the University of NSW in 1977, Dr James Wong completed postgraduate training at Concord Repatriation and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals. Dr Wong has been in private practice since 1985 and has vast experience in adult clinical cardiology. His interests are coronary disease, hypertension and preventative cardiology.
Dr Wong is a Visiting Medical Officer at The Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga, The Hills Private Hospital, Baulkham Hills, Lady Davidson Hospital, Dalcross Hospital and The Mater Hospital. He is a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and a Member of The American College of Cardiology and The American Heart Association.
He has been a regular speaker in educational seminars for doctors and the community and has been a mentor for medical students and young doctors via the AMA mentor scheme.
He speaks both English and Cantonese.
Dr Bill Petrellis
Dr Petrellis completed his advanced cardiology training in Melbourne in 2003, following which, he undertook a two year clinical Fellowship in electrophysiology and arrhythmia management in London, Canada.
He was appointed Assistant Professor with the University of Toronto at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. Dr Petrellis worked as a consultant electrophysiologist and clinical teacher for a year prior to his return to Sydney in mid 2006.
He has particular expertise in ablation of complex cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, device implantation and follow up. His teaching interests include speaking and demonstration of device implantation techniques for cardiology and cardiac surgical trainees.
Dr Athula Gunasekara
Dr Gunasekara graduated from Queensland University in 1997.
He completed his basic training at Royal Brisbane and The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane and then moved to Westmead Hospital for training in interventional cardiology.
In 2008 he further developed his interest and expertise in clinical and interventional cardiology and in endo-vascular procedures at the prestigious Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Institute in New York.
His clinical interests are in the areas of complex coronary intervention, percutaneous therapy for valvular heart disease, and peripheral vascular intervention.
Dr. Gunasekara’s research interests lie in endovascular therapies in coronary and peripheral vascular disease and he has published articles on new technology in coronary and vascular intervention.
He is a member of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and the American College of Cardiology.
Dr Jason Kaplan
Dr Jason Kaplan graduated from the University of NSW in 1999 with Honours. He completed his residency and adult internal medicine training at the St George and Prince of Wales Hospitals, and his Adult Cardiology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
He is an accomplished General Adult Physician having done additional training in general adult medicine and medical oncology prior to commencing his Cardiology training and is dedicated to holistic patient care.
His clinical interests include general adult cardiology including diagnostic coronary and CT angiography. He has a further interest in all aspects of non-invasive cardiology including preventative cardiology, behavioural cardiology and the effects of stress on the cardiovascular system.
He has been a Clinical Associate Lecturer in Medicine at both UNSW and the University of Sydney and is a current Honorary Medical Officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney, where he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students.
He is a member of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and a member of the Cardiac society of Australia and New Zealand.
In addition, Sydney Cardiology works with a number of long term associates who bring their specialised knowledge and skills to the group.
